In 1914, at the height of the wool industry’s “golden age,” the daily newspaper *The Magellan Times* was founded in Punta Arenas.
This newspaper became the longest-running English-language daily in the region
and was aimed primarily at the upper-middle class of the British colony.
It was well received: by 1920, 1,000 copies were being published weekly. It was sold not only in Punta Arenas, but throughout the ranches of Southern Patagonia. It stands to reason that it became the primary vehicle for disseminating news, both local and international; during World War I, it also served as a propaganda tool.
