The Beagle Channel

The Beagle Channel is a waterway located south of Tierra del Fuego and north of Cape Horn. The famous British ship on which Darwin and Fitz Roy undertook one of the most important scientific expeditions in history crossed it twice.

During these voyages, the HMS Beagle’s stop at this channel was of great significance: contact with the island’s indigenous people, known as the Yamanas, marked the beginning of a story that starts with the abduction of four indigenous people.

They were given English names and taken to Great Britain to be educated as civilized people. Years later, on the Beagle’s second voyage, only three of the natives were able to return, and the idea was for them to spread the benefits of civilization and Christianity among their people.
