The Beagle Channel

The Beagle Channel is a waterway located south of Tierra del Fuego and north of Cape Horn. The famous British ship, on which Darwin and Fitz Roy undertook one of the most important scientific voyages in history, sailed through it twice.

During these voyages, the HMS Beagle’s stop in this channel was of great significance: the encounter with the island’s indigenous people, known as the Yamanas, marked the beginning of a story that starts with the abduction of four indigenous people.

They were given English names and brought to Britain to be educated as civilized people. Years later, on the second trip, only three of the natives were able to return, and the idea was that they would spread the benefits of civilization and Christianity among their fellow countrymen.
