Amateur radio operators

Overcoming loneliness and breaking free from isolation. These were major challenges in everyday life in Patagonia.

Radio played a vital role in communication in the area. Many ranches had their own radio equipment. There were also radio stations that broadcast messages at specific times to keep the community informed.

Radio messages in Patagonia were of vital importance during snowstorms, storms, and emergencies. That is why it was important for the ranches to be equipped.

In rural areas, it was very common to find a wind generator called a “Wincharger” used to generate electricity. It was set up outdoors, and the wind charged a 6-volt battery—enough power to run those radios.

Amateur radio in Argentina adhered to the international code of conduct, and it was also a hobby that allowed people to chat with others from around the world. Every successful communication was confirmed with a postcard. As a result, every amateur radio operator collected postcards from all over the world. At the museum where I worked, we counted more than 2,000 postcards.
